Béla Bartok ⎹ 44 Duos for two violins
Bartok was a Hungarian composer born 200 years after Telemann. He eventually immigrated to the United States to escape the danger of WWII and Nazi occupation. He was best known for being the first ethnomusicologist to record folk music and to study the social structures surrounding it. He transcribed many of these original folk songs and incorporated them into his own pieces and interpretations.
A perfect example of this technique is used in his collection of 44 violin duos. In these, Bartok pairs his transcription of folk songs with the classical techniques. In our selection, we will explore the soundscapes of different places Bartok visited.
As an introduction to this journey, listen to a recording of Bartok's 6 Romanian Folk Dances arranged for chamber orchestra.
Our selection of duos will cover the lands of Máramaros, Ruthenia, Serbia, Walatia, Arabia, and Transylvania. In our discussion, we will share the compositional techniques used to evoke each culture and some more tidbits about Bartok's life and legacy.
We can't wait to share these musical gems with you in just a few weeks!
